Art by Sarnia, an introduction to the work of Sarnia de la Maré FRSA

Some older work from my back catalogue.

I am a lifelong professional artist from the UK with a studio in England. I am also a musician with the Tale Teller Club.

My art attempts to captivate and enthrall the viewer with a blend of figurative elements, digital techniques, and hand painting.

The essence of my work:
Figurative Exploration: I usually feature human figures, capturing their emotions, expressions, and inner worlds. My subjects come alive through intricate details and they are often blended into an ethereal existence where realism and fantasy collide and suspend reality for the viewer.

Ethereal Aesthetics: The use of hand applied gold leaf and acrylics layers to digital pieces adds an otherworldly quality with exaggerated illuminations and textural elements. Gold has symbolized divinity, enlightenment, and transformation across cultures. By incorporating it, I elevate my subjects, hinting at their inner radiance and hidden depths.

Narrative Layers: Each artwork tells a story. Whether it’s the quiet intimacy of “The Nap” or the futuristic intrigue of “Ableteen Android,” I invite viewers to explore beyond the surface. Many of my compositions are illustrations from my science fiction and fantasy novels and hold layers of meaning waiting to be unraveled.

Reflection and Connection: My art invites introspection. It prompts us to consider our own humanity, emotions, and existence. Through my brushstrokes (hand or digital elements, I hope to bridge the gap between artist and audience, creating a shared emotional space.

Transcending Boundaries: The fusion of traditional techniques (such as oils) with digital media reflects the contemporary artist’s journey. I perpetually transcend boundaries, blending the timeless with the cutting-edge, much like my characters, those subjects who exist in both reality and imagination. I enjoy flipping expectations and blurring the lines between free and constrained techniques.

I seek the symphony of form, emotion, and symbolism which invites us to pause, reflect, and find beauty in the interplay of light, shadow, and human experience.

My narrative is paramount with decoration flowing beneath. Often the beauty is in the ugly and I am never afraid to make art that protests, jars or evokes disapproval.
